Open Compose in the browser, or install it like an app.
Tolstoy Compose runs as a web app. You can open it in a supported browser and start writing right away, or install it from the browser when your device offers the option. There is no separate desktop download.
Choose browser or installed app
Compose gives you the same writing space either way. Use the browser when you want the fastest route in. Install Compose when you want an icon on your device and a cleaner app-style window.
- Open Compose in a normal browser tab when you are on a shared, managed or temporary device.
- Install Compose when you want it to feel closer to a dedicated writing app.
- Use the same web app across supported phones, tablets and computers.
- Receive app updates automatically through the web app.
- Return to browser use whenever installation is not available.
Open Compose in a browser
Open app.tolstoycompose.com in a supported browser and start writing. This is the simplest way to use Compose, and it works even when installation is blocked or unavailable.
- Open Compose directly from the web address.
- Bookmark the app if you prefer to keep it in a regular browser tab.
- Use browser access on work, school or shared devices where app installation may be restricted.
iPhone and iPad
On iPhone and iPad, the clearest install route is through Safari. Add Compose to the Home Screen so it opens from its own icon.
Safari
- Open app.tolstoycompose.com in Safari.
- Tap the Share button.
- Choose Add to Home Screen.
- Turn on Open as Web App if Safari shows the option.
- Tap Add.
If another browser offers Add to Home Screen, you can use that route too. If it does not, use Compose in the browser.
Android
On Android, Chrome and several other browsers can install web apps from the browser menu. The exact wording can vary by browser.
Chrome
- Open app.tolstoycompose.com in Chrome.
- Use the install prompt if it appears, or open the Chrome menu.
- Choose Install app or Add to Home screen.
- Tap Install or Add.
Samsung Internet
- Open app.tolstoycompose.com.
- Open the browser menu.
- Choose Add page to, then choose Home screen.
- Tap Add.
Other Android browsers
- Open app.tolstoycompose.com.
- Open the browser menu.
- Look for Install, Add to Home screen or the closest matching option.
- Use Compose in the browser if your browser does not offer installation.
Windows
On Windows, Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers usually offer the clearest install flow. Firefox can still open Compose in a normal browser tab.
Chrome
- Open app.tolstoycompose.com in Chrome.
- Click the install icon in the address bar, or open the Chrome menu.
- Choose Install Tolstoy Compose or Install page as app.
- Confirm with Install.
Microsoft Edge
- Open app.tolstoycompose.com in Edge.
- Open the browser menu.
- Go to Apps.
- Choose Install this site as an app.
- Confirm with Install.
Brave, Opera and other Chromium browsers
- Open app.tolstoycompose.com.
- Use the address-bar install icon, or open the browser menu.
- Choose the browser’s install app option.
Firefox
Firefox on Windows does not usually include a built-in web-app install flow. Use Compose in a normal browser tab.
Mac
On Mac, Safari can add supported websites to the Dock on recent macOS versions. Chrome and other Chromium browsers may also offer app installation.

- Open the File menu.
- Choose Add to Dock.
- Confirm with Add.

- Use the address-bar install icon, or open the Chrome menu.

Firefox on Mac does not usually include a built-in web-app install flow. Use Compose in a normal browser tab.
Linux
On Linux, install support depends on the browser and desktop environment. Chrome, Chromium, Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi are the best places to check first.

- Open app.tolstoycompose.com.
- Use the address-bar install icon, or open the browser menu.
- Choose Install or Install page as app.
- Confirm with Install.

- Open app.tolstoycompose.com.
- Open the install option from the address bar or browser menu.
- Confirm the installation.
Firefox

ChromeOS
On ChromeOS, Compose can be installed from Chrome when the install option is available.
- Open app.tolstoycompose.com in Chrome.
- Click the install icon in the address bar, or open the Chrome menu.
- Choose Install Tolstoy Compose.
- Confirm with Install.
- Open Compose from the launcher or shelf.
Troubleshooting installation
If the install option does not appear, the app can still be used in the browser. Most installation issues come from browser support, device settings or managed work and school restrictions.
- Reload Compose and check the browser menu again.
- Try Chrome, Edge, Safari, Brave or another supported browser.
- Use the browser version if your current browser does not offer installation.
- Remove the shortcut and install it again if Compose opens in a normal browser tab after installation.
- Ask your IT team if the install option is blocked on a managed work or school device.
- Save important work as a
.composefile before clearing browser data, reinstalling a browser, resetting a profile or moving to a new device.
